Introduction
Situated in contemporary Zuoying, the Old Fongshan City was the first wall built in the County by the Qing Government after taking control of Taiwan, and was also Taiwan's first city wall. The wall was built with coral stone from Chaishan and was filled with cement, while the arch was built with granite from China. It has been designated a grade 1 national heritage site.
The North Gate (Gongchen Gate): located on the intersection of Shengli Road, Yimin Lane and Pizitou Street, the North Gate is completely intact, and the wall extending to the left and right has a length of more than 100 meters. The stone has been cut into hexagons, and the outer side of the gatehouse is decorated with colorful reliefs depicting guardian spirits which evince fine craftsmanship.
The West Gate (Danhai Gate): situated within Zizhuxinli (Zihjhu New Village) in Zuoying, only a section of the wall just over 100 meters in length remains. The gate's sign, which reads “West Gate” is currently on display in the Former British Consulate in Takao.
The East Gate (Fengyi Gate): still present in its entirety, over 500m of the wall remains, extending towards Yong Ching Elementary School on the right and meeting Haiguangxinli (Haiguang neighbourhood) on the left. A total of 9 crenellations have been built along the wall, as well as an inclined horse track, which is divided into 7 grades.
The South Gate: situated at the intersection of Zuoying Avenue and Qishan 3rd Road , the South Gate's sign's inscription of the “Qiwen Gate” has been kept intact to the present day.
