The 2016 National High School & University Creative Song-Jiang Jhen Battle Array Competition came to a smooth end on April 9. National University of Tainan won the NT$1 million cash prize, followed by the University of Taipei, Shih Chien University, and Lunghwa University of Science and Technology. Wu Hung-mou, deputy mayor of Kaohsiung, thanked the participating teams for the inspirations they brought to all. It is with their heartfelt efforts that the tradition has been so wonderfully expressed.
In its 12th year, the competition again garnered attention from around the country. The array teams not just practiced the tradition, but also tried their best to blend new elements, such as cheer dance, martial art, electronic guitar music, etc. into their works. The audience members, amazed, gave numerous rounds of applauses as they watched the arrays.
National Formosa University only participated in this event for the first year. It combined the array with street dance, martial art and fan dance. National Siluo Agricultural Industrial High School proudly presented a folk legend of Qikan in the town of martial art, Siluo (Xiluo). Lunghwa University of Science and Technology integrated the array with rock music to better express the fighting spirit. Chih-Yung Senior High School and Dajia Battle Array Group 53 worked together to pass down the tradition, coming up with a creative combination of Song Jian Battle Array, martial art, lion array and pop dance.
“I’s Array” by I-Shou University showed a new type of “leisure-time aesthetics.” I’s Array knows well about fan dance, Chinese martial art and drum-and-flag array, and modern design details can be found in the performers’ makeups and the props they use. National University of Tainan presented Chapter 40 of old Chinese novel “Water Margin” – ‘Heroes of Liangshan Marsh Storm Execution Ground’ with a combination of lion and dragon dance, juggling, martial art, dance, theatre and of course battle array. NUT’s allianced members from Kobe, Japan led the array and impressed the viewers deeply. University of Taipei’s team consists of street dancers, runway models, acrobatic gymnasts and dragon and lion dancers. Shih Chien University’s team, only founded 10 years ago, introduced different elements such as
Nanquan, flag dance, street dance and indigenous pop dance to the historic Song Jiang Battle Array, with the concept of “the fiery monkey of the Year of Binshen.”
Deputy Mayor Wu stressed that he was touched by the students’ effort in preserving this tradition. All of the students have received instructions from devoted senior battle array artists.
