The 2016 Cijin Black Sand Play and Arts Festival, Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau’s major summer event and the biggest summer fest of southern Taiwan, will soon kick off amid much fanfare at 6 o’clock on the evening of July 2 at the Qijin Beach. During the two-month festival period, sand sculptures, light shows, water activities, DIY classes, beach volleyball games, pet shows, “starry runs” and rock music concerts will all be held from week to week.

Until not long ago, Qijin almost lost its sands due to environmental problems. Luckily, after the government set out to conserve Qijin’s coasts, the beach has become beautiful again. The festival was held last summer for the first time in promotion of the area’s black sands. This year the sand exhibition will be open until 10 o’clock at night daily. All members of the public are encouraged to appreciate the sculptures at Qijin after the sunset, while eating good food and immersing in summer breezes.

All of the sands that are used to make the sculptures are Qijin’s sands. Hence no sands may fill the town’s air due to transport. While making the sculptures, water will be also sprayed to keep sands from swirling up. The fluffing sands seen recently on the beach are a result of southern coastal winds, however, and therefore beyond the organizer’s control. Such is a natural phenomenon and not related to the sculpturing activities held during festival time.

Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Director Tseng Tsi-wen invited all to attend the one-and-only evening sand sculpture and light shows, which shall turn the beach into a unique stage. “Black sand shredded ice,” a newly invented dessert, will be served to help visitors get rid of the summer heat. Why not join the festival to see, play and eat black sands!
