A magnificent kite show took place at 15:00 on July 31 at the 2016 Cijin Black Sand Play and Arts Festival held on Cijin Beach, Kaohsiung.

The show, touted by Director of the Tourism Bureau Tseng Tzu-wen, was brought to the audience by Kaohsiung City Yunxiao Kite Flyers Association, which has given guest performances at the Pingtung International Kite Festival and held much applauded shows at the Mashagou Coastal Recreation Area in Tainan before.

This time in Kaohsiung, the association brought along a trilobite-shaped kite that’s nearly 100 square centimeters large, a whole range of curious and cute kites, such as octopus, Chinese-opera-face, tadpole and dragon kites, and even some LED kites for the night. The kites were flown by a team of stunt kite flyers and a few individual wild kite flyers. The association effectively turned Cijin into a giant kite-flying playground. This kite event is considered the biggest and most attractive side-event of this festival. Family visitors were especially invited to take part.

The association’s chief secretary Chuang Chin-yuan noted that Cijin is a great place to fly kites because it has a vast beach and lots of winds. The Cijin Beach looked all the more beautiful when all of the beautiful kites fly high in the blue sky. The scene was more than enjoyable for kite flyers and the audience alike.

At the festival, an exhibition showing a wide range of vivid sand sculptures is also being held. “We are confident that visitors will be amazed by the artworks,” a festival representative said.

Since its opening on July 2, more than 400,000 people have visited the festival site. With the festival to run until September 4, the Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau expects it to draw a million visitors in total for Cijin by the end of the summer.

A Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau officer noted that, in conjunction with this summer festival, “Cijin Black Sand Two-Day Tour” K.P.P Taiwan Pass is now for sale. It includes two days of unlimited city bus and subway rides and one round Cijin boat journey. The pass is sold at a special price of NT$338 (originally NT$570) including a wide range of shop and accommodation offers. It is definitely a great tool to use for anyone wishing to take a port city vacation during festival time. On weekends, parent-child sand workshops and water activities are held, in addition to a competition display of sand sculptures. All members of the public are cordially invited to enjoy a cooling summer in Kaohsiung. For more info, please visit the website for the 2016 Cijin Black Sand Play and Arts Festival.
