This year’s Kaohsiung Lantern Festival was unveiled by the first of a series of Portside Fireworks Shows at 10 pm, Xizi Bay on January 30, 2017. A few more music and dance performances were held prior to the show.
This year’s festival ran until February 12, 2017 and most events took place along the Love River. The Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau used traditional and modern lanterns to illustrate the festival theme, “Happiness in the Year of Rooster.” There was even a special area that showcased flamboyant temple lanterns. On the Lantern Day (Feb. 11), a ten thousand-participant lantern parade was held. Smaller waterfront fireworks shows were held daily from the third day of the lunar January till the Lantern Day along the Love River.
The Portside Fireworks Shows took place along the 1,000-meter breakwaters of Xizi Bay and Qijin, first at 10pm on January 30 – Kaohsiung Lantern Festival’s opening day, as aforementioned, and then at 10pm on February 4 and midnight on February 11, the Lantern Day. Each of the shows lasted 20 minutes 17 seconds, symbolizing year 2017. The beautiful fireworks could be easily appreciated in all corners of the Kaohsiung City.
Tourism Bureau Director Tseng Tsi-wen noted that she recommended Starlight Water Park for an expansive view of Xizi Bay and Qijin and the fireworks. For a birds-eye-view of the Kaohsiung Port and the fireworks, staying at one of the hotels near the park would be a great idea.
To enjoy the fireworks show at a close distance, go to MRT Xizi Bay Station. From there, take a shuttle bus to Xizi Bay Scenic Platform. To go to Qijin, take a shuttle boat first to Qijin and then walk to Qijin Coastal Park.
