In response to the New Southward Policy, Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau tries to draw more visitors from Southeast Asia. It recently held a fam tour for Vietnamese tourist businesses to promote tourism in Kaohsiung. On April 12, a group of Vietnamese business representatives from the tourism industry arrived at Kaohsiung’s international airport, and embarked a six-day tour from southern to northern Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Director Tseng Tsi-wen offered litchi cakes to the representatives and thanked the participating local business owners for helping to show the beauty of Kaohsiung to their Vietnamese counterparts.

Director Tseng said that according to statistics from Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transport and Communications, in 2016, the number of visitors from Southeast Asia to Taiwan already reached 1.65 million, including 196,000 from Vietnam, 34.33% more than that of 2015, showing great growth potential. In fact, Kaohsiung and Vietnam have enjoyed close interactions. Every week, 22 direct flights depart from Kaohsiung to Hanoi and Ho Chi Ming City, which is truly convenient. From Kaohsiung International Airport, visitors not only can explore Kaohsiung, but also Tainan, Pingtung, Penghu and Taitung. The director is confident that southern Taiwan has much to offer to Vietnamese visitors. She welcomes Vietnamese businesses to study Kaohsiung’s tourist options more and looks forward to working with Vietnamese businesses.

Again, the group included 20 tourist business representatives from Hanoi and Ho Chi Ming City. Upon arrival in Kaohsiung, they took a boat to appreciate the views of Kaohsiung Port and nighttime city scenes. Then, they went to Liuhe Night Market to try a variety of local food, and got a taste of Taiwan’s religious culture at Fo Guang Shan and its Buddha museum. Finally, they visited Lianshi Lake and Spring and Autumn Pavilion for some lakeside views and learn about Kaohsiung’s old architecture. The representatives were all deeply interested in what they saw and ate, and said that they would definitely consider offering Kaohsiung tours to their clients and encourage people to visit Kaohsiung, especially for its beautiful scenery and delicious food.
