The "MICHELIN Guide Taiwan 2023" Star restaurants released today! In this edition, Kaohsiung claims a total of four selected restaurants, including “Liberté,” which boasts the MICHELIN DNA from Japan, promoting from one to two MICHELIN Stars. “SHO,” and the newly awarded “Haili,” both received one MICHELIN Star recognition. Additionally, newly selected Thomas Chien, the No. 1 French cuisine in southern Taiwan, was awarded the “MICHELIN Green Star,” acknowledging its sustainability efforts and earnest environmental practices. With these four restaurants earning a total of five stars, Kaohsiung's international culinary scene shines even brighter. Among the 27 Bib Gourmand restaurants and the 23 MICHELIN-selected restaurants, a total of 53 establishments have left their mark in the history of MICHELIN this year. Mayor Chen Chi-Mai pointed out that the number of restaurants in Kaohsiung selected by the MICHELIN Guide has grown from 39 last year to 53 this year. This recognition has brought affirmation to the restaurant industry in Kaohsiung, enabling the City's cuisine to enter the international stage and illuminate the world.

Tourism Bureau Director Kao Min-lin remarked that 14 more restaurants in Kaohsiung are selected in the MICHELIN guide this year. The Star record has reached a higher level, jumping from the original two stars to five stars, highlighting Kaohsiung's prowess in international cuisine. Coupled with recent culinary events, Kaohsiung has successfully marketed its gourmet food to both domestic and international audiences, capturing the attention of judges and tourists alike. Beyond the MICHELIN recommendations, Kaohsiung has even more delicious options waiting to be explored.

This year's most significant surprise among the newly selected MICHELIN-starred restaurants is “Liberté,” which has ascended from one to two stars, marking a new chapter for fine dining in Kaohsiung. Chef Kenji Takeda, upon receiving the award, stated, “I will work even more diligently and create better dishes to safeguard this honor.” Chef Takeda excels in combining local ingredients, unique seasonings, and precise cooking techniques, resulting in dishes that are rich in color and layers, showcasing the subtleties of seasonal changes, and offering the truly classic creations. “SHO,” recognized with one star, is the first overseas sister restaurant of “Den” in Japan, which is also a prestigious fine dining restaurant in Kaohsiung. The menu reflects the chef's lively and playful personality, incorporating Taiwan's unique ingredients to their fullest potential. The first-time recipient of the MICHELIN Green Star, Chef Chien, dubbed the “No. 1 French cuisine chef in southern Taiwan,” opened in 2012 “THOMAS CHIEN,” a restaurant full of his personal style. He meticulously showcases the distinctive characteristics of Taiwanese local ingredients, with a particular talent for highlighting seafood from southern Taiwan. Another newly awarded one Star restaurant, “Haili,” is one that prides itself on incorporating the Japanese spirit into French cuisine. Chef William, who has worked at MICHELIN-starred restaurants such as STAY by Yannick Alléno, RAW, and logy, brings fusion of Japanese and French flavors to Kaohsiung. Receiving MICHELIN recognition right after opening a restaurant for the first time in Kaohsiung adds culinary delights to the City.

The Tourism Bureau also urges everyone to plan a culinary trip using the MICHELIN Guide. Do not miss the “Kaohsiung Bubble Tea Festival” from September 2nd to 3rd in Yanchengpu and the “Kaohsiung Hot-Air Balloon Festival” at the end of September. Take a hot-air balloon ride over the Love River and the Moon World, enjoying views reminiscent of the Seine River in France and the badlands of Cappadocia in Turkey.
