Attracting 69.23 Million Domestic and International Tourists - Taiwan's Hottest Travel Destination is Kaohsiung

National champion and Taiwan's tourism synonym - "Kaohsiung"! According to analysis from the Forward-looking Tourism Policy Research Office and the Tourism Administration, Kaohsiung City attracted over 69.23 million tourists in 2024, an overall increase of 11.8% compared to 2023. Compared to pre-pandemic 2019, it has impressively grown by 97.6%, making Kaohsiung Taiwan's most popular travel destination! Kao, Min-lin, Director of Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau, pointed out that Kaohsiung benefits from diverse tourism resources including mountains, sea, rivers, and harbors, accessible sea and air ports, and efficient public transportation. The Tourism Bureau has demonstrated tremendous creativity and execution capability, taking multiple approaches to boost post-pandemic tourism. These include carefully planning major events like "Kaohsiung Wonderland," expanding concert economy and convention tourism, promoting to overseas markets to attract international travelers, enhancing accommodation and tourism industry capacity, and actively integrating and marketing Kaohsiung's local tourism resources to create significant economic benefits. Kaohsiung tourism has been doing impressively well, ranking first nationwide for numerous times and once and again receiving recognition from domestic and international ratings and media awards. "Visiting and touring Kaohsiung" has become the latest trend. Kaohsiung not only occupies an important position in the hearts of domestic and foreign travelers but has also become the number one choice for traveling in Taiwan.

Director Kao, Min-lin pointed out that in 2024, Kaohsiung City hosted the "Kaohsiung Wonderland" event with the "Rubber Duck" theme for the first time, not only popularizing the City brand through events but also creating a "City IP Economics", successfully attracting 9 million tourists and generating NT$14 billion in tourism revenue. In early 2025, the Kaohsiung Wonderland themed with "Chiikawa" once again swept across the nation, bringing in 6 million visitors and generating tens of billions in value,successfully attracting a large number of parents and children, and youngsters from home and abroad, further enhancing Kaohsiung's international tourism visibility, attractiveness, and economic benefits.

Since 2023, Kaohsiung has become a hotspot for international stars to hold concerts, including Black Pink, Coldplay, One Ok Rock, Ed Sheeran, and Maroon 5, among various other concert events. In 2024, 157 concerts were held, attracting 1.71 million domestic and international visitors, generating over NT$5.7 billion in tourism revenue. Celebrities and idols make the most of their time in Kaohsiung, visiting attractions such as the Pier-2 Art Center, Great Harbor Bridge, Fo Guang Shan, and Lotus Pond, and tasting local Kaohsiung delicacies including hot pot, beef noodles, coffee desserts, and xiaolongbao, then sharing their experiences on social media. This attracts high attention and following from multinational fans, successfully driving the overall growth of the tourism industry.

In recent years, Kaohsiung has leveraged large-scale events and concert economics, boosting the tourism industry chain. Domestic tourism performance has been outstanding. During Spring Festival, long weekends, and major events, accommodation occupancy rates reached 80-90%,with some urban areas fully booked during certain festivals. International tourists increased to 1.36 million, growing by 20%. International hotels such as Marriott, IHG, and Hotel Nikko recognize Kaohsiung's potential and have been investing in the Kaohsiung tourism market. In 2024, there were 8 more hotels and 13 more B&Bs joining the business, with the City now offering over 20 thousand rooms of various types. Kaohsiung has also received "Excellence" ratings in accommodation evaluations from the Tourism Administration seven times.

The Tourism Bureau further pointed out that Kaohsiung City's outstanding tourism performance has also received widespread recognition and affirmation from many domestic and international media. It has not only won the 2024 Common Wealth Magazine Excellence in Governance Award and ranked first in Global Views Monthly's National Tourism Satisfaction survey. The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival "Kaohsiung Wonderland" attracted large crowds and ranked first in online mentions. International travel booking platforms Agoda's "Most Fun and Affordable in Asia 2024" and Klook's "2025 Global Emerging Travel Destinations" both selected Kaohsiung as Taiwan's only listed city.

Kao, Min-lin stated, "When traveling in Taiwan, Kaohsiung is definitely the first choice." Kaohsiung tourism takes root in Taiwan and looks toward the future, hoping that Kaohsiung can establish itself in Asia and soon become part of the international stage. Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau will continue to improve Kaohsiung's tourism infrastructure, facilities, and service quality, enhance popular attractions, scenic areas, and the overall urban tourism environment, and will continue to launch more innovative and distinctive tourism highlight activities to further strengthen Kaohsiung's brand positioning as Taiwan's first-tier international tourism city.
