Siaolin Memorial Park was completed and opened in 2012, and was built to commemorate the 462 residents of Siaolin (Xiaolin) Village who were buried in a landslide on the night of the 9th of August 2009 as a result of Typhoon Morakot. 181 indigenous Taiwanese mountain cherry trees were planted in the park, representing the 181 families who had been lost. The nine-meter memorial monument was made from a piece of stone which fell downhill during the typhoon, symbolizing giving the villagers new life and the strength to rebuild.
